Minimum age for employment is 16. NC Labor laws do not allow anyone under the age of 16 to work past 9:00pm. We regularly have movies that do not begin until 9:00 which require employees to be on duty until 9:30 or 10:00.

There is some moderately heavy lifting involved in the job. i.e.- 5 gallon buckets of popcorn oil, bags of popcorn kernels, boxes of soft drink syrup, etc. All employees are cross trained to do whatever job is required such as ticket seller, concession worker, ticket taker, cleaning or working in the projection booth.

We are typically open 364 days per year. The only day that we regularly close is Christmas Eve. You will be required to work some holidays throughout the year. We are open New Year’s Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, etc.

Our busiest days are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All employees are required to be available to work weekends. We do our best to rotate schedules to allow every employee to not have to work every weekend unless requested. Our requirements are difficult for students involved in band or football that requires that they be off the schedule EVERY Friday as an example.

Typical Hours

  • Monday through Thursday during the winter months- 6:00-10:00pm
  • Monday through Thursday during the summer months- 4:00-10:00pm
  • Fridays- 4:00-10:00pm (if we have 3 shows) 4:00-7:30 (if we do not have a 9:00 show)
  • Saturdays- (varies according to movie length) typically 1:00-9:30 or 10:00
  • Sundays-(varies according to movie length) typically 1:00-7:30 when school is in session. Typically, 1:00-9:30 or 10:00 when school is not in session

We attempt to schedule several weeks in advance and give employees the opportunity to mark off days that they are not available to work. Obviously those who have less flexibility as to when they are available normally get fewer hours on the schedule. Once you are scheduled to work it is your responsibility to get another employee to work in your place and to have that replacement approved in advance by management if you are not available to work your scheduled time slot.

For many, working at the Gem Theatre is their first job. While we are happy to communicate with parents as needed the primary responsibility is placed on the employee.
